"I am committed to offering a free tech class program for aging adults that encourages them to live independently. This program provides the opportunities that older Michiganders need and want to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. It aims to help them develop new skills, connect with others, and unlock new life experiences—all while ensuring they stay connected to the technological tools they need to thrive in our digital world with confidence."
~Clayton Cortez, Instructor

SENIOR TECH CLASS

The mission of our program is to empower older adults by providing them with comprehensive education and access to computer technologies.

Our objective is to enhance their overall quality of life through digital literacy. To achieve this, we offer an engaging 8-week complimentary technology training program located in Detroit, MI.

This thoughtfully designed program aims to enable participants to effectively share their knowledge and life experiences in an increasingly digital world.

Throughout the training, we focus on equipping older adults with the essential skills needed to navigate and thrive confidently within the modern digital landscape.

The classes emphasize not just technical proficiency but also the practical application of technology in daily life, ensuring participants understand how to leverage digital tools to improve their independence and connectivity.

The purpose of our senior tech classes extends beyond mere instruction; we aim to foster a supportive community where older adults can learn together, making technology a means of connection rather than isolation.

The benefits of attending our tech classes include:

  • **Confidence**: Participants will gain hands-on experience, which builds confidence in using devices and applications, making technology feel less intimidating.
  •  **Social Connection**: Our classes provide a platform to stay connected with loved ones and to make new friends, fostering a sense of community and support.
  • **Mental Stimulation**: Engaging with technology serves as a way to improve cognitive functions and memory skills, keeping the mind sharp and active.
  • **Reduced Isolation**: Enhanced digital skills can help diminish feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety by providing tools to communicate and interact with others more effectively.
  • **Convenience**: Participants will learn how to streamline everyday tasks, such as seeking information, online shopping, and managing appointments, enhancing convenience across various aspects of life.

Through our program, we strive to create an enriching environment where older adults can become more independent, informed, and connected, ultimately increasing their engagement in the digital world.

**Senior Tech Class – Questions and Answers**

**How do I register for class?**

To register for the Senior Tech Class, you need to come in person on the first day of class. During the first session, you’ll fill out a Registration Form, which is essential to officially secure your seat in the program. It’s a straightforward process, and we’re here to help you every step of the way!

**Can I register on a different date if I cannot attend the first class?**

If you can’t make it to the first class, you might still be able to register later if there are seats available. However, since spots are limited, we strongly recommend attending the first day to guarantee your place.

**What does “first come, first served” registration mean?**

It means we have a cap of 70 students for the class. Once we reach that limit, registration will close. If the class fills up, we’ll try to offer another session at a different time. To ensure that you have a seat, please do your best to attend the first day.

**Do I have to register for each session?**

No, once you register on the first day, you’re all set for the full eight-week course. You won’t need to register again for each weekly session.

**What will the first day of class look like?**

On the first day, you’ll spend about 30 minutes registering, and then we’ll have a 30-minute orientation. During this time, we’ll chat about what to expect in class, how the sessions will be structured, and everything you can look forward to over the next eight weeks.

**Can I register through the University of Detroit Mercy?**

Unfortunately, no. Although our classes take place at the University of Detroit Mercy, they don’t handle the registration or program logistics. We appreciate having their classroom space, but all the registration details are managed directly by us at the Senior Tech Class.

**What supplies, items, or devices should I bring to class?

You should come to class prepared with a reliable pen to write with, a notebook for taking manual notes, and a folder to store any paperwork provided during the session. Regarding technology, the only electronic device you are required or permitted to have is your smartphone. You do not need to bring a laptop, desktop, tablet, or any other additional hardware, as the course is designed to be completed using only these essential tools and your mobile device.

**When Will the Next Class Session Occur?

The Senior Tech Class is a free 8-week program offered throughout the year. Sessions are organized by season, with four sessions annually: spring, summer, fall, and winter.     Specific start dates vary each year, so there are no fixed calendar dates for when a new session begins. After each 8-week session, there is typically a one-month break before the next session starts. This schedule allows participants time to rest before beginning another term. To find the most accurate and up-to-date information about upcoming session dates, it is best to visit the official website and sign up for program updates. This ensures you will be notified as soon as new registration dates are announced.

**Does this program cost anything?**

Nope! The program is entirely free to attend.

**Do I have to be a senior to participate?**

Not at all! While the program is designed with seniors in mind, anyone aged 18 and older is welcome to join. We love seeing families participate together, like parents bringing their adult children along.

**What happens if I miss a class?**

If you happen to miss a session, it’s your responsibility to catch up on any assignments and review the material. We try to record lectures when possible for online review. It’s also a great idea to connect with a classmate for notes and updates. If time allows, the instructor may provide additional information about what you missed.

**What is the purpose and mission of the Senior Tech Class?**

Our mission is clear: we want to help seniors become equipped, confident, and independent in their use of technology. We’re committed to ensuring that no one is left behind in today’s digital age.

**What exciting opportunities occur during the program?**

We’re excited to bring in guest speakers to share their insights and experiences, and we may also organize trips and events. The greatest joy comes from watching participants grow, learn, and build confidence together.

**Who is the instructor?**

The class is led by Clayton Cortez Smith, the founder and lead instructor. He’s a multimedia journalist with a master’s degree from Columbia College Chicago and a bachelor’s degree from Siena Heights University. Robert Newson, a writer and producer, also contributes as a guest speaker and supporting instructor. We are fortunate to have various community leaders share their expertise with us.

**Will we receive a certification and have a graduation?**

Yes, indeed! At the conclusion of the eight-week program, we host a graduation celebration, usually at the Northwest Activities Center. If you attend any of the sessions during the program, you’ll be eligible to receive a Certificate of Participation. The graduation festivities typically include a celebratory lunch and recognition of your achievements!
