Lesson 2: Introduction to QR codes

In this course and video, seniors explored the world of QR codes and learned about their purpose and functionality. Mr. Smith offered step-by-step instructions on how to scan QR codes using smartphones, providing tips on how to focus the camera correctly while scanning.

Lesson 3: Learn the basics of Text Messaging  (Part 1)

This course is designed to provide seniors with an overview of the basic concepts of text messaging. We covered important topics such as maintaining basic texting etiquette, the dos and don'ts of texting, group texting versus single texting, SMS, and tips for avoiding text scams. Students also learned standard texting abbreviations and acronyms, often referred to as "texting slang."

Lesson 4: Pop Quiz & Review Time!

This course is specifically designed to boost active recall skills and enhance long-term retention for seniors as they explore the world of technology. Engaging in pop quizzes not only motivates students of all ages to study more effectively but also fosters a deeper understanding that leads to lasting knowledge.

Lesson 5:  A Beginner's Guide to Understanding Mobile Apps

This engaging course is designed to help seniors become proficient in using mobile applications, often referred to as mobile apps. Students will explore essential concepts and discover a wide variety of apps available on their devices, enhancing their digital skills and making everyday tasks easier and more enjoyable.

Lesson 6: ZOOM

During the emergency phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of individuals turned to video conferencing platforms for work, education, volunteering, dating, and maintaining connections with friends and loved ones. However, many seniors, feeling left behind by this rapid shift in technology and social practices, may still be missing out on its significant advantages.

 

This course is designed to introduce seniors to Zoom! According to Mr. Smith, "Learning to use apps like Zoom benefits older adults by enhancing cognitive function, improving mental well-being, promoting overall health, fostering social inclusion, and boosting self-confidence."





Lesson 7:  Joining a Zoom Meeting *Quiz / Assignment

This course examined and tested the seniors' skills, knowledge, and capabilities to determine whether they could join a Zoom Conference successfully and independently. This hands-on course assessment aimed to demonstrate their learning, reinforce their understanding, promote independence, and overall verify if they have successfully mastered joining a Zoom meeting.  The evaluation also determines if they know how to navigate their Zoom platform, like raising their hands, adding emojis, using the chatroom, and turning their camera and audio on and off.  During this course, many seniors displayed that they had mastered the skills required to join a Zoom meeting.




Lesson 8:  ZOOM Review & Introduction to Cash App

In this course, we reviewed the process for joining a Zoom meeting comprehensively.   Furthermore, we emphasized the significance of familiarizing seniors with the Cash App. Understanding Cash App is vital as it provides a convenient and accessible means for conducting digital financial transactions. 

 

Mr. Smith states, "By equipping seniors with the knowledge necessary to utilize these applications, we empower them to remain abreast of current technological advancements and engage meaningfully in our increasingly digital society, irrespective of age."




Lesson 9: Technology Safety & Security Precautions Tips

In this course, seniors studied various strategies aimed at ensuring the safe and secure utilization of technology. The course's primary objective is to enable seniors to recognize potential risks and acquire effective procedures to prevent falling victim to scams. Addressing technology safety and security enhances seniors' well-being, productivity, and quality of life as they navigate the evolving technological landscape.

 

Mr. Smith stated, "It is important to equip seniors with essential knowledge that enables them to make informed decisions, thus reducing their risk of falling victim to new technology scams."



Lesson 10: Fire Safety Technology & Safety Precaution hosted by Detroit Fire Department

In this course, Lieutenant Terrell of the Detroit Fire Department delivered a comprehensive presentation on strategies to safeguard the elderly community through the integration of new technologies. Participants engaged in discussions regarding fire safety practices and examined methods for utilizing innovative devices to mitigate fire risks. Lieutenant Terrell provided essential evacuation guidance for emergencies and elaborated on the City of Detroit's newly implemented smoke alarm program.

 

Mr. Smith remarked, "As technology continues to advance, a greater number of devices are becoming available to assist seniors with fire prevention efforts. By equipping our older community members with appropriate tools and information, we can foster a safer and more secure future for all."
